Making an entrance
When Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott challenged developers to build high-quality new homes for firsttime buyers for less than £60,000, excluding the cost of the land and professional fees, there was a chorus of objectors saying it couldn’t be done. However, one major firm of homebuilders, Redrow, stepped forward to say that they could do it.
They announced that they were already on site with a scheme at Willans Green, Rugby, building 103 starter homes whose selling prices would start from £54,995 for a onebedroom flat – and that price included the cost of the land.
This was the Debut One model, whose rooms are described trendily on the floorplan as Eat, Sleep, Splash and Relax, instead of the more stuffy Kitchen, Bedroom, Bathroom and Living Room.
There are four other Debut models selling at prices up to £119,995 for a two-bedroom two-storey home with an additional room called Think, or as we would say, Study. All buyers share the communal outdoor space, which is maintained by Redrow, and there are cycle stores to discourage the use of cars, and waste sorting facilities to encourage recycling.
Construction uses the Surebuild lightweight steel frame system, which ensures quality and precision, as well as sustainability and energy efficiency. With high-performance communal heating and hot-water systems, Debut homes have an Ecohome rating of Excellent.
