From the outside, the prosaically named Building 46 at the Royal Arsenal gives little hint of what lies within. This Grade II listed two-storey building, whose design has been attributed to James Wyatt, was built in 1806-13 as the West wing of the Grand Store that served as a warehouse and general depot for the Army. It was the centrepiece of a grand quadrangle open to the Thames.
Building 46 has now been renovated and converted by Berkeley Homes into 24 spacious homes that vary in size from a two-bedroom apartment of 900 sq ft to a three-bedroom apartment of 1,493 sq ft, with selling prices that ranged from £260,000 to £435,000.
It is the interiors of this listed building that are such a surprise. Some of the ceilings are so high that galleries have been inserted that can be used as dining areas or studies. Wherever possible, plaster on the walls has been removed and the brickwork has been grit-blasted and sealed, adding warmth, texture and colour to the interior and reflecting the building's original character. Original columns were also retained and treated. Windows, joists and architraves were also retained and restored wherever possible. The biggest treat for buyers are the modern kitchens and bathrooms.
