Commendation for Best Housing Project of the Year

Newhall, the new neighbourhood being developed on the edge of the oldest of Britain's post-war New Towns, Harlow, goes from to strength, having already gained an award and a commendation in these awards in the past two years. This year CALA Homes gains a commendation for its CALA DOMUS scheme designed by innovative architects PCKO, which has modular construction, rooftop photovoltaic panels and a "living wall" that combines services and storage, allows for upgrades and makes living space more flexible.
This was the winning entry in a limited architectural competition to implement the master plan prepared by Roger Evans Associates for New Hall Projects, the company set up by landowning brothers William and Jon Moen to keep careful control over everything that is built on the family's former Newhall Farm.
CALA is building 74 new homes on 4.74 acres (1.92 hectares), ranging from three- and four-bedroom houses with full-height glazing to a landmark four-storey copper-clad tower with split-level apartments accessed by lift as well as by a spiral staircase. Prices range from £145,000 for a one-bedroom apartment to £450,000 for a four-bedroom townhouse. The development is due for completion at the end of this year.
