SAILING HOME

Admiral's Quay, Ocean Village, Southampton, Hampshire SO14 3JF
As the home of ocean racing and the Royal Southampton Yacht Club, MDL's Ocean Village Marina is deservedly popular, but visitors have been aware for some time of the rundown appearance of the far side of the marina. It is not rundown any more.
Today there are tower cranes as Wilson Bowden City Homes races ahead to complete its Admiral's Quay development by the end of 2006. This will have a total of 435 apartments in six blocks along the quay, the first three of which are already built: Sundowner, Mistral and Sirocco. Prices range from £250,000 to £1 million-plus, and every apartment has a balcony.
There will also be ten ground-floor shops, restaurants and bars when this lively development is complete, and three sculptural works by public artist Mel Chantry designed to tell the story of the docks that used to be on the site of the marina basin. Ian Simpson, regional director of architects Broadway Malyan, has brought to the scheme the flair of his firm's designs for the waterfront in Cape Town, South Africa.
