Phases 1-3, Cambourne, Cambridgeshire CB3

Cambourne is a private-enterprise new community that is being built on 1,000 acres of greenfield land west of Cambridge. When complete, it will have 3,300 new homes, built in three distinct villages (Great Cambourne, Lower Cambourne and Upper Cambourne), each with a village green, plus a 50-acre business park, shops, offices, sports centre, health centre, fire station, police station, country park, golf course, over 500 acres of new public open space and 170 acres of new woodland, grassland and wetlands.

Working to the initial master plan prepared by Terry Farrell & Partners in 1995, landscape architects Randall Thorp produced a landscape structure plan that was approved in 1997 and is now being implemented. Although only the first three phases have been completed, the quality of the landscaping is clearly visible, and with more than 1,200 new homes already built and occupied, and the business park prospering, Cambourne is already a reality.

This page can only give a flavour of the development, which received a commendation from the judges, who look forward to seeing later phases as the whole development comes to fruition.
