Commendation for Best Social Housing Development
IT'S A GAS

Affordable housing blocks, The Regency Apartments, Vincent Street, London SW1P 4AG
It is unthinkable today that anyone would build a gas works in the heart of Westminster, a few hundred yards (or metres) from the Palace of Westminster, the abbey and the Tate Gallery. Yet, until a few years ago, it was a gas works that stood on the site in Vincent Street of what is now The Regency Apartments, a development of 204 apartments and three luxury houses by Barratt.
With sale prices that were from £270,00 up to £1 million, the development has been a success, with several Members of Parliament among its buyers, but what about the workers? Today, thanks to a more realistic approach to housing, even luxury developments have to provide a proportion of social housing (or make a financial contribution to the local authority).
The Regency Apartments has five blocks of private apartments and three blocks of social housing, built to the same design by Assael Architecture. The social housing consists of 16 shared-ownership apartments for Notting Hill Housing Group and 33 for letting at affordable rents by Ujima Housing Association. In blocks rising to seven storeys, the apartments range in size from 650 sq ft to more than 1,000 sq ft and most have balconies with views over London.
