Commendation for Best House of One or Two Storeys
ISLAND VENTURE

Ventura (Sectors 7 & 8), St Mary’s Island, Chatham, Kent ME4
Chatham Maritime is the largest regeneration project currently being undertaken by SEEDA (South East England Development Agency). This mixed-use redevelopment of the former Royal Dockyards that closed in 1984 is creating 2,000 new homes and a variety of other uses on 350 acres of land around two large dock basins on the River Medway, one of which is a 450-berth marina.
The new housing is being on the 150-acre St Mary’s Island by Countryside Properties, which has been working here since 1996, using different architects for the various phases of the master plan. These two-storey houses in Sectors 7 & 8 provide 164 new homes designed by architects O’Keefe Scanlon in a contemporary way to give large open-plan living spaces with modern kitchens, bathrooms and conservatories.
The larger houses have first-floor roof terraces with the houses angled away from the street to gain views of the river. Others have master bedrooms in vaulted roof spaces. Butterfly roofs are a strong element of the design, and colour is also an important part of it. Prices start from £249,000 for a three-bedroom townhouse.
